Activities in Progress in the Past

⧪    use the past continuous to talk about activities that were in progress      (happening) at a specific time in the past. This may be an exact moment in the past or a longer period of time in the past.

الماضي المستمر يستخدم عن أفعال (أنشطة ) أو أحداث كانت في تقدم واستمرارية في وقت محدد في الماضي .ربما تكون لحظة واحدة أو مدة طويلة في الماضي.

      It wasn't raining at lunchtime. It was snowing.

     You were acting strangely last night.

     I was studying at KSU in 2011.

⧪   the past continuous is often used to talk about several activities that were in progress at the same time.

الماضي المستمر عادة يستخدم للحديث عن عدة أحداث مازالت في الحدوث في نفس الوقت.

       At three o'clock she was making a phone call, and we were eating dinner.

⧪    the past continuous expresses an ongoing past activities that may or may not be completed. In contrast, the simple past usually expresses a completed past activity.

الماضي المستمر يعبر عن أحداث ماضية مازالت مستمرة قد تكون أو لا تكون مكتملة. في المقابل ، فإن الماضي البسيط يعبر عادة عن حدث ماض مكتمل.

□Also can also be used for showing that what you have just said about someone or something is true about another person or thing.

🔗2. Not only --- but also

○This is a relatively formal structure. When you use this structure don’t forget to put not only and but also before the words or expressions that they modify. Also make sure that the structure is parallel.

◇He was not only a great singer but also an accomplished pianist.

◇I was not only upset but also angry.

◇He not only misbehaved with the servants but also broke the windows and furniture.

🔗3. Not only can be moved to the beginning of the sentence for emphasis. It is then followed by auxiliary verb + subject. If there is no auxiliary verb, we use do / does / did.

◇Not only did he misbehave with the servants, but he also broke the windows and furniture. (NOT Not only he misbehaved with --)

○But can be left out in this case and then we separate the two clauses with a semi-colon.

◇Not only did he misbehave with the servants; he also broke the windows and furniture.

🔗1. These expressions have similar meanings to the determiners much, many and most, but the grammar is not quite the same. Of is used after these expressions even before nouns with no determiner.

🔗2. A lot of and lots of

□These are rather informal. There is not much difference between a lot of and lots of. They are both used mainly before singular uncountable and plural nouns, and before pronouns. When a lot of/lots of is used before a plural subject, the verb is plural.

A lot of and lots of عامية كلاهما تستخدم قبل المفرد الغير معدود وأسماء الجمع وأيضا قبل الضمائر.

◇A lot of my friends live abroad.

◇Lots of time is needed to learn a language.

□Plenty of means enough and more. It is used before singular uncountable and plural nouns.

Plenty of تعني كفاية أو الزيادة تستخدم قبل المفرد الغير معدود وأسماء الجمع.

◇There is plenty of time.

◇Plenty of shops accept credit cards.

🔗4. A large amount of, a great deal of and a large number of

□These expressions are rather formal. A large amount of and a great deal of are generally used before uncountable nouns.

A large amount of عادة تكون رسمية وتستخدم قبل الأسماء الغير معدودة.

◇She has spent a great deal of time in Europe.

○A large number of is used before plural nouns. The following verb is plural.

◇A large number of issues still need to be addressed.
